For example, some societies allow the consumption of dog meat but that would be unthinkable for most people in the United States who keep dogs almost as members of their family. Similarly, cows are sacred in some countries and are not eaten. There seems to be a moral component to these rules but they are tolerated because morality is seemingly relative. At the same time, while that seems to be the case, there are issues that do not seem to fit. People are sometimes outraged due to injustices and are not able to accept the argument that morality is relative. For example, when Hitler decided to exterminate the Jews, no one tolerated that and claimed that Hitler could do what he liked as his actions were moral to him and the Third Reich. According to Hitlers theory, his final solution--which was moral to him-- included killing millions of people. There is no country or body of people, with the exception of extremist groups, that would condone Hitlers actions. Hence, one can say that there is a morality that is above and beyond culture. Humans have intrinsic morality. The student goes on to explain that James Rachels does argue that point and claims that there is a minimal standard for "proper moral conduct." His view seems to provide an adequate response to the relativists. For Rachels, if there is a moral position, there must be a moral reason behind it. In other words, one cannot say that they believe one thing or another just because they are emotionally involved in a situation.
