Dozens of famous people and international organizations defend Peltier, while fewer defend the courts decision. As Anonymous (2000) writes, we tend to paint criminals like Peltier as martyrs. Whatever anyones belief about Leonard Peltiers guilt or innocence, the United States government presented a case, garnered a conviction, and that conviction has been upheld in all subsequent appeals. Background According to the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Inc.(LPDC) (2004), as a "participant" in the American Indian Movement (AIM), Peltier was asked to assist the Oglala Lakota tribe at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota (LPDC, Activist, 2004). Peltier was asked to come to Pine Ridge in 1973 along with AIM members Darrell Butler, Robert Robideau, Michael Anderson, Wilford Draper, Norman Charles, Norman Brown, and Joe Stuntz on invitation extended by the tribal leadership, where they stayed in a temporary encampment called Tent City (U.S. v. Peltier). The LPDC states that the AIM members came to oppose the Guardians Of the Oglala Nation (GOONS) (LPDC, Quick Facts, 2004). The GOONS were hired and supplied with weapons and ammunition by the tribal chief, Dick Wilson, to maintain peace. Members of the tribe and AIM were against Wilsons leasing of uranium-rich land to energy companies (Summers, 2004). In addition, the "good squad" used violence to settle issues.
