model that suggests fairness in hiring is relevant. That is, someone who is in the field of human resource management needs to be aware of the importance of making sure
that their firm is being a good corporate citizen. Walsh (2006) in fact addresses this, and other issues, related to relevant topics for HR managers. Yet, it is also
important to note that affirmative action is not a panacea and many claim that it leads to reverse discrimination. Not only that, but in an age where race is not
as much of an issue as it was long ago, one has to wonder if race is still relevant. If it is not, then firms are doing a disservice by
incorporating affirmative action programs. First, why was affirmative action ever used in the first place? There was a claim that because minorities are at a disadvantage, due to
their own access to inferior education, their grades may not be up to par. They deserve a chance in a higher education facility or a position in a firm even
if they have not achieved as much as a white, male competitor. At first glance, it is an idea that makes sense. Yet, while affirmative action makes sense in
theory, it has not fared well in practice. Also, if one takes race into account, one has to believe that race exists more as a biological than a social fact.
Yet, many do not believe that this is the case. Of course, that is not to deny that race matters. Arguably, race as it is defined by society, does matter.
