and his notoriety with the religious leaders of Rome also determined the significance of his work from a historical perspective (Pioch). Though comparisons have been made between Benjamin West
and a number of other young American painters, including John Singleton Copley and Gilbert Stuart, art historians have recognized Benjamin West as an influence in the development of the artistry
of these men, developed both by what some have deemed European sensibilities, and through the increasing appreciation of Wests paintings throughout the modern world of the 18th century.
While West was recognized as an influencing factor in the creation of the emerging body of American art, he was clearly not relegated to the same "second class" status as
many other American artists; his work led to recognition as a major artist in England and even recognition as a religious artist by the Vatican in Rome. Before the production
of the great history paintings of Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley in the 1770s and 1780s the most impressive large history pictures were undoubtedly the enormous canvases painted by
Francis Hayman for the Rotunda at Vauxhall Gardens during the Seven Years War. Jonathan Tyers, the proprietor of Vauxhall Gardens on the south bank of the Thames, had long since
realized the potential of employing large-scale works of art in a public setting (Allen 12). This development of Wests artistry and his combined personal history are important to note
