while the ethics of some are questionable, Lopez has contributed much to the field. Further, his ideas in retrospect were ahead of his time. The economy was booming for part
of the time when he was in charge at GM, but the recent recession has caused companies to question their tactics. Today, the techniques that Lopez created do not look
so bad, because he was conscious of costs. In this day and age, many manufacturers have had to take a firm hand. Some have laid off worker or close their
doors entirely. In light of this, the strategy that Lopez employed was perhaps only slightly unethical, because it would potentially save companies from bankruptcy. Thus, there could be mitigating circumstances
that would render his actions acceptable. Of course, while Lopez did contribute much to GM, he went out with a bang, and his departure remains controversial. While Lopez was a
part of GM and made speeches to his employees that suggested loyalty, rumors spread that he was leaving to go to VW (Moffett & Youngdahl, 1999). While GM denied these
rumors, the truth is that Lopez did in fact accept a job with Volkswagen and his transition was imminent (Moffett & Youngdahl, 1999). As soon as the news hit, stock
prices for GM plummeted (Moffett & Youngdahl, 1999). GM officials tried to convince Lopez to stay (Moffett & Youngdahl, 1999). At first, he accepted an offer for a promotion
