There are basically three types of muscle tissue in the human body. These types include skeletal
muscle, visceral muscle, and cardiac muscle. The latter has obvious importance in life function. While we may think of it as one of the most simplistic aspects of our
physiology, our cardiac system is in actuality quite complex. It relies on the precise coordination of a number of components that interact to sustain life. Heart disease can
impact the function of one or more of these components. Cardiac muscles function in respiration and circulation (Muscolino, 2009). The heart acts
as a pump and transports the blood and other fluids in one direction throughout the body (Heart Advisor, 2009). Although the heart is the most important pumping mechanism in
the body, in the healthy body it is assisted to a small degree by the muscular action of the walls of the arteries. This muscular action in itself works
to transport blood around the body. Even the most seemingly simple reflection of life, the heart beat, is in
reality a complex phenomenon. It occurs because of a two part process where our heart chamber first relax then contract to comprise one cycle (U.S. Department of Health &
