document that supports both the centrality of the government and protections through a system of checks and balances. Though the government is divided between three distinct branches, the executive,
the legislative and the judicial, the level of power still maintain by the executive branch is one of the weaknesses in this countrys system. In understanding the Constitution of
Cameroon and its impact on the Republic of Cameroon, their internal structure and international relations, it is necessary to assess the formation of the Constitution, the structure of the government
and the role of the president in recent years. All of these factors help to define the impacts of the Constitution on the country as a whole and provide
a basis for a comparison with other governments based on a three tiered constitutional government, including the United States. Background of the Country The European presence in Cameroon can
be traced back to the arrival of the Portuguese in the 1500s, but significant European settlement did not take hold in the country until the late 1800s (Countries of the
World, 2003). Because of Cameroons coastal borders, European slave trade often came and went via Cameroon and other coastal countries, and this was the basis for the European presence
in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. In fact, the northern territories of Cameroon were central to the Muslim slave trade network (Countries of the World, 2003).
