Infant mortality and life expectancy, of course, are two of the primary indicators of health. Other important indicators include birth rates, morbidities, and levels of communicable and chronic
diseases. The CDC also recognizes the importance of other indicators as well. Higher rates of preventable disease, disability and death, for example, are consistent indications that one
culture is suffering from adverse health impacts that are not impacting other cultures (CDC, 2009a). Among the leading health indicators utilized
by the CDC are such things as the level of physical activity that is representative of a particular culture or community (CDC, 2009a). The number of individuals that are
overweight and actually obese in that group is an important health indicator as is the level of tobacco and substance abuse. Whether a culture or community employs responsible sexual
behavior is a critical health indicator. The number of teenage pregnancies is just one example of an indicator that is commonly utilized by the CDC (WHO, 2009). The
status of mental health in the community, the number of injuries, the level of violence, and the environmental quality that characterizes a community are important health indicators as well.
The number of individuals that have been immunized for preventable diseases is a critical indicator as is the level of access to health care (WHO, 2009).
