The buffalo soldiers were those black soldiers who fought alongside the whites, for the most part, prior to the Civil War. They fought with the whites in an attempt to
bring down the Native Americans in this country and the name Buffalo Soldiers was a name given the black man by the Natives due to their very dark skin. One
author, Paul H. Carlson, takes the reader on a historical journey of one particular event which involves some buffalo soldiers. His book "The Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877" is a
book which details one event that before now was really only seen through accounts that came from white soldiers. The following paper briefly examines Carlsons book. The Buffalo
Soldier Tragedy of 1877 1877 was apparently a very dry year in Texas. The entire state was suffering from an incredibly bad drought and as such there was little water
to be found. This did not seem to be one of the primary concerns of a routine scout that was set out upon by approximately 40 buffalo soldiers and the
whites who led them. They were in search of a band of Comanches who were raiding local homesteads. It was, for the most part, considered to be a fairly routine
endeavor and not one that was expected to take very long. However, this routine project turned into a disaster primarily because of the drought. After a few days having
been gone three of the buffalo soldiers returned to the fort, Fort Concho, and reported that the others in the troop were lost and perhaps dead because of thirst. The
story quickly spread and became known as the Staked Plains Horror as the events were uncovered. Most of the soldiers did eventually find their way back to the fort,
