as the play progresses the character begins to emerge as more complex than one had previously thought. The following paper examines how and why the audience perceives Mrs. Popov, and
what motivating forces are seen in the character of Mrs. Popov. The Brute by Chekhov One of the primary elements or occurrences of the play that determines how
the audience sees the character of Mrs. Popov involves her revealing information that is presented to the audience. She tells the audience that she will essentially never love again, that
she will forever be connected to her dead husband. She is "weeping and wailing" when Mr. Smirnov arrives and this lays a foundation for the audiences understanding of Mrs. Popov
as a character (Chekhov 1044). But, the audience begins to see her very differently as she seems to reveal more about herself through the play, and as different, often surprising,
characteristics emerge. But, at the same time, one can also cling to a notion that what motivates her in the beginning, and throughout the story, is actually grief.
AS the student requesting this paper notes, "The dialogue between Mr. Smirnov and Mrs. Popov begins in a respectful manner" and this is because
