This book is written not from Portillas perspective but rather from the perspective of the indigenous peoples on which the Spanish inflicted so much terror. Consequently, Portillas book is
invaluable in allowing us to see the Spanish conquest for what it was. It was, in fact, a bloody and heartless affair designed to steal the land and resources
of the Aztec people and to force them into servitude to the Spanish; not some admirable and peaceful excursion into a foreign land to meet with and help those that
lived there. Portillas book is made credible by his strict attention to accuracy and documentation. There are typically two versions of each account included in the book, one
is the Spanish version and one is the Aztec version. One of the most interesting aspects of "The Broken Spears" is the fact that the perspectives presented differ so
radically from those of the Spanish. Through "The Broken Spears" we see that the Aztec had a mixed reaction to the Spanish according to the time and place
as well as to the participants. Chapter 6 of the book tells of gift giving and the arrival of the God Tezcatlipoca. The gold which is given of
course only whets the Spanish appetite for even greater riches. Never-the-less the Spanish are welcomed into Tezcoco in Chapter 7 and Tenochtitlan in Chapter 8. In Chapter
9 we learn of the massacre in the main temple during the Fiesta of Toxcatl and from this point on the downward spiral of Spanish and Aztec relations is obvious.
Chapter 10 recounts the night of sorrows, Chapter 11 the Siege of the Tenochtitlan, Chapter 11 the raids into the besieged city and Chapter 13 the surrender of Tenochtitlan.
