concern in the retail industry. The economy in Brazil has suffered in line with the global recession, but Brazil was one country which may be seen as effected
to a lesser extent compared to many other nations. In 2009 the country had a GDP of $1.499 trillion at the official exchange rate, and $2.025 trillion at purchasing power
parity rate (CIA, 2010). The real rate of GDP growth in 2009 was -0.2% but given the global climate, and a number of countries that the suffering this was a
relatively satisfactory performance. By comparison there is a general positive trend, with only 2009 so far seeing a fall, the 2008 level at purchasing parity being $2.029 trillion which was
a 5.1% increase n the previous year, which in turn was an increase in 2007 where there was a GDP of $1.931 trillion which was an increase of 6.1% on
2006 (CIA, 2010). In terms of GDP per capita, this equated to $10,200, indicating that there is still a lot room for improvement, and as such it is likely to
be an increasing market, and it appears that there is a recovery underway in 2010, the IMF has revised his prediction for GDP growth for Brazil, expected to reach a
positive rate of 2.5% for 2010 (Economy Watch, 2010) Brazil is also a country where there is a high level of population below the poverty line, estimated at 26% in
2008, the gap between the rich and the poor is very high, low 10% of the population only consume 1.1% of the goods, whereas the richest 10% assume 43% of
