Issues surrounding long hours, unsatisfactory working conditions and unfair wages worked together to create a political and economic quagmire so entrenched within the department that law enforcement officials felt they were left with no other choice than to impart a complete work stoppage, which commenced on September 9, 1919, just as the night shift was to come on duty. The events that ensued during the subsequent forty-eight hours provided undeniable testimony to the strength and determination Boston's police department displayed in standing firm upon their commitment for better working conditions, shorter hours and higher pay. II. THE STRIKE Just over eleven hundred Boston law enforcement officers walked off the job that September night in 1919, ultimately creating a scene of panic, rioting and looting,
much of which took place downtown. It is not that Bostons finest stopped caring about their city and the protection of its people; rather, they believed that the city
had stopped caring about their significant contributions to keep Boston a civilized place to live. Their point was duly made during those turbulent two days following the strike, inasmuch
as the citys arrant population came out in force to illustrate just how instrumental the police force was in keeping order. Their intent was to create better working conditions,
fewer hours and higher pay in exchange for putting their lives on the line and upholding the law. According to the Boston police department, financial compensation did not offset the
demands of the job. While the policemen received a raise in 1913, any benefit of this wage increase was wiped out four years later due to "high wartime inflation"
