has been attributed to the Apostle John (NIV, 1995). It was a very dark time in Christian history when the Book of Revelation was written, Christians were being severely
persecuted (NIV, 1995). The two periods of time most often identified are 54-68 during Neros reign and 81-96 during Domitians reign (NIV, 1995). Scholars tend to identify the year 95
as the date this book was written. As punishment for his Christian missionary activities, John was exiled to the island of Patmos (NIV, 1995). It was during this exile that
John wrote this Book. Traditional belief is that Jesus dictated the book to John, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Gospel of Jesus. Many of the
faithful believe these are the words of Christ Himself. Thus, Jesus is the author and John the transcriber. The title itself, Revelation, means this Book is intended to reveal the
truth. Johns purpose for writing was to give hope to the Christians who were facing torture and death for practicing Christianity (NIV, 1995). The emperor was demanding all people worship
him, something Christian believers could not do (NIV, 1995). The major message falls within the purpose of Johns writing, which is that there will be an ultimate battle between God
