It was a time of great turmoil and war between and among nations, especially Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon (Jackson, 2004). The major historical events during Jeremiahs life were: during the reign of Josiah, in 612, Assyria defeated Babylon and Neneveh fell; Jehoahaz reigned for only three months, Egypt exiled the king in 609, also in 609, Josiah was killed in the Battle of Megiddo; during the reign of Jehoiakim, the Battle of Carchemish was waged with Egypt defeating Babylon in 605; the battle of Carchemish ended Egypts domination over Judah, the same year the first Siege of Jerusalem was waged with Daniel, Shadrack and other Jewish nobles exiled to Babylon (Grace Community Fellowship, 2005). In 597, the King was exiled to Babylon and the Second Siege of Jerusalem was launched. During the reign of Zedekiah, in 588, the final siege of Jerusalem began; the city was destroyed in 586 (Grace Community Fellowship, 2005). Zedekiah ruled for 11 years but he also rebelled against Babylon, the Egyptians would not help him and Jerusalem was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 (Grace Community Fellowship, 2005), Babylon was clearly the military power in the region (Brueggemann, 1998). Judah was helpless against the stronger forces of Babylon. When Jerusalem fell, the Jews were deported to Babylon and continued listening to the Prophet Jeremiahs words about the covenant with God and how they had violated that covenant. Jeremiah repeats to the people what God has warned: "Tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Cursed is the man who does not obey the terms of this covenant" (Jeremiah 11:3).
