of The Boeing Company. Remote Environment There are unique economics in the aerospace/defense industries (Penn State University, 2005). These include the communications, and tourism and travel industries (Penn State
University, 2005). The health and stability of these adjacent industries have a direct impact on the aerospace industry (Penn State University, 2005). The overall health of the national and global
economy affect this industry as does the nations defense budget (Penn State University, 2005). For instance, airlines will purchase new aircraft when travel and tourism is forecast to continually increase
over the next several years (Penn State University, 2005). Travel and tourism are affected by the national economy; as individuals and families have more disposable income, they travel more. Even
the business model of airlines affect their purchases of new aircraft - point-to-point airlines do not purchase as many planes as do traditional hub and spoke airline models (Penn State
University, 2005). Technology has had a dramatic impact on this industry. Automation, new materials and innovative designs lead to new and better aircraft. Boeings 787 Dreamliner airplane is a good
example. The plane will have "an entirely new electric-based architecture" (Wikipedia, 2005) with every subsystem being revised to work with the new architecture (Wikipedia, 2005). It also has a central
computer instead of hundreds of separate boxes keeping track of things (Wikipedia, 2005). The plane is efficient as well (Wikipedia, 2005; Pike, 2005). The plane will be 20 percent more
