used in the New Testament to refer to the communion feast, which is frequently referred to by the Latin term Corpus Christi, which means literally "body of Christ" (Harrington 30).
The following examination of the concept of the body of Christ doctrine investigates the role that it has played in Christian theology, that is, how various theologians have regarded it
and incorporated it into their ministry. The Eucharist sacrament is "rooted in ancient Israels social experience as the people of God" (Harrington 30). In stories, such as God providing
manna for the Hebrew people while they wandered in the wilderness, as well as in other instances, scripture establishes the concept of food symbolizing "Gods ongoing presence and care" directed
toward humanity. This concept continues in the New Testament with the establishment of the Eucharist as a sacramental meal, and this is the understanding of the body of Christ that
one finds in the writings of Martin Luther. Luther, on two occasions, first in 1525 and then in 1528, asserted that his position on the body of Christ agreed
with the one stated in First Corinthians 10:16: "The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break,
is it not a participation in the body of Christ?" (Althaus 384). As this indicates, Luther grounds his perspective on the body of Christ and the unity of the church
