reflects the way in which the understanding of the body has changed over time. In fact, body image and assessments of factors like age have been recognized as socially
driven elements that have been shaped and reshaped over the centuries. The 17th century painter Rubens, for example, reflected the ideals of beauty in his time, often painting portraits
of robust women with large busts and wide hips. The current age is marked by a focus on women who must never eat, who maintain their 510" frames on
little more than celery and set their goals at maintaining weights below 120 pounds. In both cases, the body is a manifestation of the culture of the time, and
women and men alike seem to support and strive to protect the cultural image valued. Similarly, values placed on age and aging have led to devaluations of certain members
of society. Though there are many famous, celebrated actresses in Hollywood who are over 50 years of age, few of them really look their age. Instead, many of
these individuals seek altering surgical procedures and medications that help them look younger, based on the belief that age is neither attractive nor valued. In the 20th century, old
age is considered a kind of social plague, while the Greeks and Romans of ancient times placed great emphasis on the beliefs, morals and even the appeal of their aging
populations. Some of the conceptual view of the body is based on the mass cultural perspectives and changing views
over time. The mass culture of the United States and many Western countries promotes specific images of women that have changed over time. In the 1950s, for example,
