The following paper examines how Morrisons novel presents the reader with the theme of the blues and offering cultural wisdom in the process. Blues and the Bluest Eye
It appears that the earliest depiction of the blues comes after a scene wherein Mrs. MacTeer gets angry for the girls when Pecola drinks more of her share of milk,
according to the view of Mrs. MacTeer. This is also a scene that is just before the issue of menstruation and growing up. There is a reference to the
blues and in this reference there is a sense of bridging the gap between childhood and womanhood. The blues which are referred to by Claudia illustrates a sense of cultural
knowledge and values which are primarily told through an oral tradition, combining the blues with the cultural wisdoms. Such is seen when Claudia always seems to recall Saturdays and
her mother singing. She remembers hearing bits and pieces of songs, hard time songs, which contain such phrases as "hate to see that evening sun go down," which is actually
a reference to "St. Louis Blues" by W.C. Handy which is one of the very first, and most popular, of blues songs (Morrison 25). From this examination we can see
how Claudia is very powerfully influenced by blues and music in her life. From her earliest recollections we see that the blues are part of her culture, part of her
