States were often ignored in the face of other larger issues, or so it seemed. The nation experienced a great deal of turmoil and the focus of change involved the
white workers of America and no other group. They were pushed aside in favor of a nation that was to pretend it emulated such things as seen in a Norman
Rockwell painting. The following paper examines one excerpt from Toni Morrisons "The Bluest Eye" and an excerpt from Frances K. Pohls "Framing America" concerning the New Deal, illustrating how they
present us with a very vivid picture of the real America, the America beneath the propaganda. The Bluest Eye and the New Deal As mentioned, during the Great
Depression the nation needed help, answers, and hope. Roosevelt made many changes in order to pursue hope in the people, creating the New Deal which essentially changed numerous things about
the government, the economy, and the agriculture of the land. But, the focus was generally considered to be on the white people of the nation, though that was really never
claimed or stated. It was to encourage those hard working (white) Americans and to give them hope in the future. By pushing away the cultural people of the land (the
African Americans, the Latin Americans and the Native Americans) away into the foreground the white man, so to speak, could feel that he was important and the focus of the
government. By not mentioning any racial concerns, which were still very important for the Civil War was not too long in the past, the white man could feel he was
important to the nation. Without being noted, the fact that any cultural people were not included specifically in any New Deal focus gave the people the understanding, however subconscious, that
