This was the first murder investigation in which DNA testing was the means by which a killer was pinpointed. Furthermore, this case was also the first in which a man
suspected of the murders, who had previously confessed, was proved to be innocent. When the proper culprit was brought to trial, there were numerous incriminations leveled at the police.
For example, journalists wanted to know why police had not suspected Colin Pitchfork, the man who was found guilty of these crimes, much
earlier, as he had a record of "flashing" (i.e., exposing his genitalia in public).1 The following examination of the manner in which the police investigation was conducted, as discussed
in Wambaughs book, will show that the police, at all times, followed proper procedure, but, being only human, could not have discerned the guilt of Colin Pitchfork earlier than the
point in time in which they did. In November of 1983, Lynda Mann, an adolescent with an A-average who exhibited the usual tendencies of a teenager, was found
raped and murdered in the village of Narborough located in Englands East Midlands, about six miles southwest of the city of Leicester. When Manns body was found, her jeans,
tights, underpants and shoes were in a rolled-up heap about ten or fifteen feet away.2 She was naked from the waist down, with her legs extended straight out, her head
bent to the right. Her scarf was wrapped around her neck and crossed at the back.3 She had been strangled. Until November of 1983, there had never been a
murder inquiry in the villages of Narborough, Enderby and Littlethorpe.4 A 150-member murder squad was brought in from Leicester for the investigation. Despite the intensive investigation conducted, a year passed
