nice. At least, that is what the world relays and the stereotype persists. In Alice Munros Boys and Girls, this grimy portrait of the male is symbolized in her use
of the blood motif throughout the story. In the work, themes which seem to come forth most prominently is coming of age, sexuality in general and gender differences. One
can see how these are inextricably linked as for example, growing up almost always involves sexuality. And of course, in growing up, there will be differences in how boys and
girls do just that, and this relates to gender. Some themes are discussed interchangeably and terms such as maturation and sexuality are used almost synonymously. The theme of growing up,
or coming of age, is rather obvious in Boys and Girls as there is much reference to the adolescent segment of life. The depth of the characters
is particularly important in demonstrating the point that sexuality is a part of the human composition and that is integral to the theme. Without the skill of Munro, the themes
might be buried with just a scant plot controlling the movement of the characters. Yet, here ones sees colorful characters. The characters do in fact clearly demonstrate their sexuality.
Yet, in examining this aspect, it is tempting to link it with gender. However, gender is a separate category as well as a strong component. The title Boys and
Girls clearly and distinctly reflects that the piece is about boys and girls as separate entities and not as human beings in general. The society today in many ways has
