While it has undergone many changes in the past few years, becoming modern in some aspects, it still retains a very powerful presence in relationship to its gothic and neo-gothic traditions. The following paper examines the gothic and neo-gothic elements, as well as the modern elements, illustrating how the church balances the various styles. The Blessed Sacrament Cathedral: Detroit, Michigan This particular cathedral clearly speaks of gothic architecture perhaps more than anything else. But, at the same time when finding the differences between gothic and neo-gothic, in terms of architectural style, there seems to be very little difference between the two and as such they blend well and generally stand as a contrast to the more modern styles implemented in this church. For example, one can understand that both gothic and neo-gothic styles involve the same architectural styles as neo-gothic was nothing more than a revival, often with different materials, of the gothic style. One author notes that, "Building shapes and details have a strong vertical emphasis, with sharply pointed arches and finials" in the neo-gothic style (Neo-Gothic: Style Definition, 2005). Gothic style "emphasized pointed arches, flying buttresses and elaborate tracery. Art wise, it was largely ornamental and meant to enhance the architecture" (The History of Gothic Art: From Gothic Architecture to the Neo-Gothic Art Movement, 2005). From these descriptions we can see that the styles of architecture are not necessarily different and they are seen throughout the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit.
