by African Americans in the nation. White gloves gave the impression these people were clean and perhaps made the white masters more comfortable knowing their hands were clean, and white
being a far more comfortable social color for the whites. Black face was because black people were not generally allowed to be actors or actresses, and with the white society
controlling all aspects of society it is not surprise they would also take on the roles of blacks. These ideals and realities are reflected in Jean Genets "The Blacks: A
Clown Show." In this play the black actors and actresses wear white masks. The following paper examines the significance and symbolism of the white masks. The Blacks:
A Clown Show This play is a story that is very reflective of the old time minstrel shows, a parody involving people of
race, and a satirical and oppressive sort of performance normally associated with blacks. The minstrel shows were powerful social performances that remain in history as one of the most important
historical pieces of information regarding how blacks were perceived in society. They were ridiculed and presented as children and Genets play is very much a parody on these minstrel shows.
The play itself is perhaps hard to follow in relationship to its dreamlike quality but for the most part it is the
