Just the mention of the name Edgar Allan Poe often brings shivers of anticipation to those that enjoy immersing themselves in horror stories. Indeed, although Poe has been dead over one-hundred and fifty years he will live on into perpetuity as the greatest horror story author to have ever lived (Readers Companion to American History). Not only are Poes stories some of the best ever written they are among the first horror stories the literary world ever knew (Smith). Poe was preoccupied with death, disfigurement, and the darker aspects of the universe. He was an expert at blending together characters, plot and setting in such a way that his reader was captivated. "The Black Cat" and "The Cask of Amontillado" exemplify his talent perhaps better than any of his other stories. Each of these stories provides a unique insight into the darkness that lives within the human soul, a darkness which is capitalized upon by Poes brilliant use of emotion as both an underlying force in his tales and as an emotion which he occasionally allows to gush to the surface in an unrestrained rage (Cutts). Poe, like his stories, was quite unusual. Even his physical appearance hinted that his mental processes were quite different from the mainstream. Smith describes Poe as a man of: "...striking appearance. He had deep-set eyes, full of shadows and pain, and a forehead uncommonly wide, as if the shadows and pain had triggered thoughts that no normal skull could contain". ...
