which played a major role in naval engagements in World War Two, was constructed in Hamburg in the Blohm and Voss shipyard. Her keel was laid in the summer of 1936, and she was finally launched early in 1939, at a ceremonial and well-publicised launch attended by Hitler himself. She was commissioned in the summer of 1940 and was finally put into active service later in that year. Bismarck was unique in that it was the first of Germanys well-constructed and effective battleships to be built after the First World War: since part of the Treaty of Versailles had forbidden Germany to rearm, it was not until Hitlers regime that the country was able to begin building up its naval and military power. Bismarck, in terms of its defences and armaments, was comparable to the standards of the combat ships of other nations. It boasted a main battery consisting of eight fifteen-inch guns mounted in twin turrets fore and aft, and a secondary battery of six-inch guns also mounted in twin turrets, which were intended for use against enemy surface destroyers. She also had an effective anti-aircraft battery, demonstrating the earlier tendency of naval builders to under-estimate the level of attack which likely to come from airborne troops.
