Matthew and Luke are two of the Synoptic Gospels, one would think both writers would report the birth of Jesus in the same way but that would be erroneous thinking.
These two versions are vastly and dramatically different. As Flynn (2004) commented, rather than discussing the even in terms of "Matthew and Luke. One might better say Matthew vs. Luke
because the Gospels . . . contradict each other on almost every detail" (p. 34). Beginning with the angels announcement to Mary, we find differences. In Matthew, Mary
"was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 1:18). By contrast, Luke begins with the angel going to Mary to tell her she has been chosen to
bear the Son of God (Luke 1:26). The angel spends time quieting Marys fears and instructs her as to the infants name, Jesus, and who He is, "the Son of
the Most High," and a ruler "over the house of Jacob forever" (Luke 1:29-33). The angel explains everything to Mary and even tells her that Elizabeth, an old woman,
is also to have a child (Luke 1:35-36). It is here the angel tells Mary that "nothing is impossible with God" (Luke 1:37). Mary responds to all of this with
great humility and eagerness to do as God wishes (Luke 1:39). She then travels to visit Elizabeth where she stays for three months (Luke 1:40). None of this is in
Matthews account. Luke writes Marys Song, also not in Matthew. On the other hand, Matthew spends time discussing how Joseph felt at learning his wife was pregnant but not by
