Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page discussion of tapeworm life cycle and impact to man. This paper provides an overview of tapeworm biology as well as specific information on Taenia saginata, the beef tapeworm which affects both humans and other higher vertebrates such as cattle and pigs and Taenia solium, a tapeworm in which the primary hosts is pigs while the intermediate host is man. These species are the two most common tapeworms infesting man and can exert tremendous economic and health impacts on the human population. They do so through an evolutionary design which ensures their success in invading and parasitizing their hosts. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

the beef tapeworm, affects both humans and other higher vertebrates such as cattle and pigs (Garcia, 2001). It and Taenia solium are the two most common tapeworms infesting man.
These two species can exert tremendous economic and health impacts on the human population. They do so through an evolutionary design which ensures their success in invading and
parasitizing their hosts. Fish can also hosts some species of tapeworms (Garcia, 2001). While cattle and pigs are the intermediate hosts for
most species of tapeworms, humans are the primary hosts for some of these species (Garcia, 2001). In other species, however, humans are a common intermediate host (Garcia, 2001).
For simplicity, most of this discussion will center around cattle as an intermediate host and humans as a primary host. It should be recognized, however, that tapeworms are increduously
diverse animals and include a wide range of impacts other than to just cattle and humans. The larval stage of many tapeworm parasites
infects cattle tissue while the adult stage of many of these species reside in the human intestine (Mosby Medical Encyclopedia, 1996). Taenia saginata is an optimum example in this
regard. This species is, in fact, the most common tapeworm species preying on man (Mosby Medical Encyclopedia, 1996). The organism can grow to tremendous lengths, some twelve to
twenty five feet (Mosby Medical Encyclopedia, 1996). Even more concerning than its impressive size, however, is its impact on our economy and our health due to our consumption of
raw and undercooked meat. Anatomy The anatomy and
