beginning of the 17th century. James Sharpes The Bewitching of Anne Gunter is a look at the story of Anne through many different historical documents. In this wok Sharpe presents
the reader with many different documents that present varied opinions of various people who were involved. But, according to Sharpe, "It is Annes version of what happened, here and elsewhere,
that ultimately convinces" (Sharpe, 2001; xiii). The following paper examines this thesis. The Bewitching of Anne Gunter When someone examines an event in history, especially an event that
no longer has any living witnesses, a great deal of possibilities come into play as one uncovers material pertinent to the event. And, because of this, it is perhaps impossible
to ever truly know the truth. In the case of Anne one could claim that the witnesses who knew Anne, and her father, may be biased in some way or
they may be simple speculative. And, the people who are directly involved are not necessarily trustworthy, especially if they set out to deceive people. As such it seems that truly
uncovering the truth about Anne would be a very difficult task. At the same time the supposed truth that is revealed seems to be the actual truth because the confessor
truly seems to have had nothing to gain through telling the truth. This is why, as Sharpe argues, Annes own telling of the truth seems to be the best and
most reliable truth. Towards the beginning of the work the author indicates that, after she had decided to tell the truth, she was "very penitent and had often upon
her knees asked mercy and forgiveness at Gods hands" in regards to what she had done ((Sharpe, 2001; 6). This clearly presents a strong argument in favor of the
