Empire was on located in western African between Nigeria and Togo and went all the way to the River Niger to the east, which is about one-fifth of Nigerias current
size. It had 121 meters of coastline and the land was mostly a flat, undulating plain, with some hills and low mountains. Being in tropical areas, the climate was hot
and humid, as well as semiarid in the north. The highest point was Mont Sokbaro at 658 m. Wysinger (2008) writes that
during the period 800 to 1,000 A.C.E. and beyond, a wall (rampart or moat) second in height to the China Wall was also built that stretched over 10,000 kilometers to
enclose the entire Benin community. These moats created a safety net around the Benin Empire, making it difficult to access from the water, and there were only nine openings in
the wall, so that citys security and trade could be protected. However, once Europeans arrived, this was no longer a protection, but a hindrance.
Ancient Benin was famous for its art, made of bronze. It was also rich in timber. The Edo created intricate wooden boxes and finger harps. Intricate jewelry, ritual items,
masks and bronze work of all kinds were its main trade. Business/Trading Traditions Giblin (1999)
says the Edo people of ancient Benin were known as the Bronze people. Their art during the ancient empire was a progression from small statutes to large, life-sized terracotta statues
