They cannot be effective mothers and workers as well, but there are positive effects that working women have on their children and also, there seems to be an absence of literature that contends otherwise. The old idea that women would harm their children by going to work has not be validated. In fact, Han, Waldfogel & Brooks-Gunn (2001) find that when controlling for the husbands employment status, that mothers employment status made some difference. That is, children "whose mothers worked in the 1st year and whose fathers were present but did not work, and children whose mothers worked in the 1st year and then dropped out of the labor market, fared worse in terms of their long-run cognitive outcomes than did other children whose mothers worked in the 1st year of life" (p.336). It is possible then that a mothers employment early in the childs life could result in improved cognition. While many contend that mothers in the workforce effectively harm children, or that it is better to stay home, anecdotal evidence finds that there are cases where women in the workforce provide a sense of stability for children. Koyana (2002) for example reports on Magona who is a single mother and able to produce well-adjusted children. Her children had become successful adults and she proves that while the Eurocentric legal system as well as the "traditional African patriarchal system" seemed to work against her, she could still be a good mother (2002). She proves the theorists wrong by succeeding despite the fact that she is a single black female (2002).
