various space program over time have been a sources of much dissension. Many contend that the billions of dollars and hours of human investment could be better spent helping
improve the quality of life on earth. In reality, however, the resources being invested in the space program in countries the world over are going to improve the quality
of life on earth! The technological developments that have come about as a result of the space program are not useful just to space exploration, they are being applied
in many avenues of human life. Space exploration also offers mankind the possibility of retrieving resources from the various planets that we might encounter, resources that are becoming more
and more needed considering the drain that has been exerted on the earths own resources. If we consider the efforts to explore Mars
alone we can see many potential benefits to that exploration. Mars offers a fabulous frontier which is potentially replete with valuable natural resources which can benefit mankind, resources which
can only be fully explored with manned flight. Mars could, in fact, very possibly serve as a home for man once, not if, the earth is finally decimated.
Mankind is ripe for additional interplanetary exploration and Mars offers one of the most intriguing and readily obtainable targets for that exploration.
Initially Mars exploration was designed to answer whether Mars had water and life, develop apparatus necessary for space exploration, and implement a manned Martian mission (Fordahl). The new
direction is toward more integration of programs from researchers, NASA and engineers with less individual missions which are narrow in scope. The most important element from this perspective
