have skills or dreams that do not require a higher education, and that colleges and universities do little to educate those who pay the money to attend. Now some of
this is obviously quite true. We see more and more information, for example, which indicates our higher educational institutions are not producing individuals who are incredibly intelligent or even perhaps
even adequately able to think critically. And, there are certainly those gifted individuals who go on to become incredible successes without having obtained a higher education. Bearing these realities in
mind we turn to an examination of how a higher education does offer many benefits and that an average individual is far better off preparing for life by obtaining a
higher education than stopping their education with high school. Higher Education In first understanding some of the benefits of a higher education we turn to the words of Mackie
(1999) who states that, "Education, attitude and timing are the three crucial elements in achieving success. Education is important as a college degree is a minimum requirement for participation in
the marketplace of the Information Age" (p. 52). While this particular article is focused on the African American students, people who, it seems, have a higher regard for the benefits
of education, it is a powerful examination which serves to illustrate just how important an education is: "Malcolm X informed us that, Education is our passport to the future, for
tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today. This adage is more applicable today than it has ever been before. As we move into the Information Age, low
wage, blue-collar jobs are being phased out in record number....many people, directly affected by the Information Age, do not possess the education or training skills necessary to perform the alternative
