to be beneficial the concept and practice of yoga as well as some of the research into the benefits can be reviewed.
The practice of yoga is documented going back as far as 3,000 years (Nayak and Shankar, 2004). The earliest practices are believed to have emerged even earlier in the Indus
valley region which is modern day Pakistan (Jayasinghe, 2004). There are many references to yoga in many old texts, including the Vedas and many ancient scriptures (Bower et al.,
2005). The specific recorded history starts roughly 200 years ago with the Yoga Sutras, recorded by the sage Patanjali, a text which has helped to define the way in which
yoga is practiced in the modern world (Bower et al., 2005). In the sutras there is the reference the 8 limbs of
yoga, these are the eight different disciplines (Bower et al., 2005). The eight limbs are the yamas which are the ethical disciplines, the niyamas which are the individual observances, the
asana which are postures, pranayama which is breath control, pratyahara which is the withdrawal of the senses, dharana which is concentration, dhyana which is meditation and finally Samadhi which is
self realization and enlightenment (Bower et al., 2005). The eight limbs of yoga may be seen to present a model for a
