is usually negative, being depicted as an invasion of privacy, perpetrated by big brother. However, the concept of surveillance is not new, the main change has been increased facilitation of
surveillance though the use of technology, due to the way it is used in private lives and the ability of the technology use to be tracked observed. This increased ability
for surveillance to take place offers may opportunities which has the potential to benefit the majority of citizens. The objections to surveillance may also be seen as contradictory; calls for
privacy when there is increased use of technology by individuals increasingly broadcasting details of their private life. One only has to look at social networking tools such as Facebook and
Twitter to appreciate the degree to which personal data made freely available. It is almost ironic that there is increasing resistance to surveillance when at the same time private lives
for many are taking increasingly recorded in public mediums. Many concerns deal with not the use of surveillance, but the abuse of
surveillance; this is another issue, it looks to the control of surveillance and relevant governance frameworks. There is no reason to believe that suitable frameworks to prevent, or detect and
stop abuses cannot be put into place, just as they have in the past with older approaches to surveillance. This overcomes many of the objects and leaves us able to
look at the way surveillance can be beneficial. There are many potential benefits that may result from surveillance taking place, either by the government or its agencies, benefiting individuals
or society. Surveillance has been used in many contexts; to maintain safety and security of citizens, to prevent crime or catch criminals and to aid with public policy formulation.
