One runner puts it this way: "I love it in the summer but suffer through it (less regularly) in the winters of New Hampshire" ("Running and Runner Resources," 2010). It is true that running is not best done when the roads are flooded with ice or snow, but it is also true that indoor tracks can provide a runner with a venue to practice until the roads thaw. Running is a sport enjoyed by many people around the nation. How many people actually run? One survey lists the amount of runners in an annual marathon in Colorado for which more than nine million participants were counted ("Statistics," 2009). Millions of people run on a regular basis ("Running and Runner Resources," 2010). Running has many health benefits. It is good for the heart and helps people to keep a healthy weight. When starting a running program, one may first begin to walk and then to jog. This can help someone ease into the sport. It is important that when starting out, one does not get discouraged as it is difficult at first (Barrios, 2007). Once someone starts to run, he or she may feel tired after a short period of time. Yet, as time goes on, performance should improve. Why should people run? The health benefits are quite attractive and it is also a sport that many people enjoy. The sports health benefits generally reach its peak during the intermediate level of training (Barrios, 2007).
