As our society grows more and more disconnected and inefficient numerous individuals have begun to look at mandatory community or government service as a means of bringing us together as
a nation and indeed as a world and as a means of providing the manpower which is needed to overcome our apparent problems. Mandatory service in such organizations as
the Peace Corps, hospitals, the military and a diversity of community outreach programs has been suggested for individuals between eighteen and twenty-one years of age. While some consider such
requirements an invasion of individual rights, others recognize that community service not only has the potential to greatly benefit the community as a whole but also the individuals themselves.
This benefit can be demonstrated with just a brief look at volunteer services as they exist today. Currently it is estimated that American
volunteers donate more than twenty billion hours, $2 billion worth, in volunteer time per year (Machi, 2000). Volunteer labor fuels many aspects of American life. Volunteers serve in
hospitals, schools, nursing homes, spouse abuse centers and many other components of the community. Sometimes this voluntary community service can result in the volunteer even putting themselves at risk.
There must, therefore, be some underlying motivation, some benefit, which these volunteers gain through community service. Uhler (1998) notes the
volunteers can be either pure in terms of their motivation or impure. He defines purely volunteer service as that service which volunteers perform for a structured program which is
rendered to benefit strangers (Uhler, 1998). In reality, however, pure volunteer service can occur in an unstructured environment as well. What about the individual who picks up garbage
