There are many reasons that breast feeding is superior to bottle feeding. The first and paramount reason is that human milk is far superior to meeting the needs of human infants than is any other type of milk. While animal milks such as cow and goat milk can, and have, been utilized in feeding human infants; they are inferior to human milk. Formulas share this inferiority as well. The purpose of this paper is to present these contentions in the format of a Rogerian argument, an argument which is complete in a review of both sides of the issues and an argument which inevitably results in a somewhat modified view of the benefits verses the problems of breast feeding. To do so, however, the thesis will be presented up front that: human milk is innately superior to other forms of milk for optimizing infant development. To complete the Rogerian argument we must clearly delineate our elements of argument and refutation while at the same time avoid logical fallacies. The first task, therefore will be to present four clearly defined causal links that can be used to explore the thesis presented above. It is important that these causes not be argumentative and that they be clearly demonstrable. Subjective topics like the relationship between breast feeding and caring for our children, arguments regarding the convenience of one method of feeding over another, or contentions as to the degree that the American family has changed are not appropriate here but instead should be included in the introductory and historical material on a treatise ...
