For instance, those veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder are sometimes viewed as having symptoms which manifest in such a way so as to inhibit or interfere with the
social interactions that are required for many jobs. Unfortunately, such a viewpoint is quite pervasive, and veterans that suffer from the combat-related illness of post-traumatic stress disorders are some of
the most likely to face difficulties finding employment after service. Such a viewpoint that these veterans are "unemployable" is false, however; in reality, there are many benefits, legal and otherwise,
to hiring veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In a sense, it may well be regarded as the duty of the civilian sector to embrace these benefits to provide employment
opportunities to returning service members. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the causes and effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. In basic psychological theory, trauma is long associated
with the onset of psychological disorders. For instance, someone who suffers the trauma of abuse may well begin to internalize feelings of worthlessness and suffer issues with self-esteem and depression.
In the case of post-traumatic stress disorder, one experiences some significant trauma but is unable to effectively process and emotionally deal with that trauma at the time due to circumstances,
and as such, the trauma continues to manifest in stressful reactions at unpredictable points in the future. For instance, a veteran who suffers the traumatic experience of combat, but is
unable to deal with the trauma effectively under those circumstances, may exhibit symptoms after returning to civilian life such as "hypervigilance and detachment from others, followed by intrusive recollections and
sleep difficulties", as well as "flashbacks and nightmares" (Holowka, Marx, Kaloupek, & Keane, 2011). It is clear to see why some employers would be reluctant to hire veterans suffering
