"The Benefits of Economic Freedom: A Survey," author Niclas Berggren (2003) provides background on the annual Economic Freedom Index assessing the degree to which economic freedom exists in various countries throughout the world. The author demonstrates that greater economic freedom is positively associated with greater economic prosperity. Positives The author includes a wide range of variables in what could be considered to be part of economic freedom in a larger perspective. A more narrow view would have been along the lines of "freedom to begin a business" or "freedom to determine personal vocation," but Berggren (2003) also notes that economic freedom can be affected by factors such as "political freedom, wealth, or democracy" (p. 193). Economic freedom is associated with, but distinct from, political freedom and civil freedom. These two features are defined by access to and protection from political processes and the presence of more than only basic civil rights. Greater economic freedom is associated with higher levels of political and civil freedom. The author provides information on the annual Economic Freedom Index (EFI), an extensive and ongoing attempt to identify all factors affecting economic freedom and then quantify them to reflect the degree to which they are present in a given economy or market. The EFI has expanded over the years to include many more countries than it did when it began in 1970. Beginning by including only 54 countries, the EFI increased the breadth of its survey to include 123 countries by 1995, the same number that were included in 2000.
