explain why criminals engage in crime. Sociologist Timothy Brezina contends that there are "benefits" of crime for those who commit them. Jack Katz would agree. Trained in
both sociology and law, Katz argues that there are immediate benefits to criminality as well. Katz labels these benefits as the "seductions of crime". Katz contends that:
"background factors such as gender, race, age, and sex need to be supplemented by foreground factors
such as thrill seeking or criminal lifestyle to understand crime" (Bonn, 2000). Katz asserts,
however, that criminals are "moral" actors and thus must be held responsible for their actions despite any potentially causative problems relating to their crime (Bonn, 2000). In other words, Katz
disagrees that one should be excused from responsibility for criminal acts because of environmental factors that might have contributed to the propensity to commit crime. Many other researchers, however,
have jumped on the bandwagon that contends that environment is a causative factor in criminal behavior. There is no contesting the fact that some individuals are more advantaged than
other in regard to the types of environments in which they live. There are, in fact, certain subcultures that perpetuate violence. (Felson, Liska, South, and McNulty, 1994).
It is a common observance, for example, that different groups tend to identify with different movies or popular themes in regard to violence (Hartnagel, 1980). As Felson, Liska, South,
