an environment where the results of work are so important, literally resulting in life and death, there is a great deal of research which indicates in healthcare environments where there
is leadership, the healthcare workers will be more motivated and productive and the healthcare standards will be higher (Kitson, 1991). The converse is also true, where there is poor leadership
there are likely to be lower healthcare standards (Pembrey, 1980, Revans, 1980). This means that leadership is needed not only at the top, but at many levels within the healthcare
service. Good leadership not only raises standards, but helps to maintain them and helps to facilitate change and the adoption of new standards or procedures.
It was with the recognition of the need for quality leadership in the UK healthcare service that the NHS Leadership Qualities Framework was launched in October of
2002 (NHS, 2002). This was a document that outlines leadership qualities and characteristics that are required by an NHS leader. The framework was based ion research of 150 Chief
Executives or Directors already working within the NHS (NHS, 2002). This is a framework that has been developed to allow assessment of individual or departments and to help with planning
for the future and development of leaders as well as for help with career mapping (NHS, 2002). Leadership is defined by this document as having fifteen main characteristics, which
