In other words, Human Resources Departments do more than merely mete out benefits. Even though HR Departments do more than provide benefits, it should be noted that benefits are quite important to employees. In fact, while it is not correct to bring these things up during interviews, many potential workers are secretly thinking about the benefits. It is one of the most important aspects of employment, as far as the worker is concerned. What types of benefits do HR Departments oversee? It used to be that benefits would run the gamut from a special fund for babysitters to expense accounts to discounts at large stores. Today, benefits have been pared down to the basics. Employers as well as workers are just interested in traditional benefits such as vision, dental, and specialty insurance packages (Liddick, 2005). First and foremost, HR handles health insurance in addition to COBRA when necessary. COBRA administration is needed after an employee is fired. The law stipulates that the employer must still allow the ex-employee to buy into the corporate group rates for the benefits. COBRA administration takes up some time as it could conceivably be administered for up to eighteen months after an employee is let go. Today, HR professionals need to be cognizant of HIPAA law as well. HIPAA is a relatively new law that protects the privacy of individuals.
