the urgent need of the young to see the world in clear cut terms of black and white, good and evil. This film asks these questions, but does not answer
them. This task is left to the audience, but the movie provides a great deal to think about. As this suggests, this is not a movie that people "like," nor
is it a particularly good film whenever director Henry Beans camera strays from the films protagonist. The story remains focused when exploring the psyche of its tortured hero. The
protagonist of "The Believer" is Danny Balint (Ryan Gosling). Danny is a fascist. He is a skinhead. He is a Jew. Like a similar film "American History X," Danny is
a working-class adolescent who, in addition to being racist, is also very intelligent. A former yeshiva student, Danny goes beyond the surface of fascism to formulate intricate theories of anti-Semitism,
but unlike "American History X," this picture is not just about hate, as it also addresses cultural issues. Specifically, it addresses the manner in which Dannys religious training ultimately
brought him to the paradoxical and self-destructive form of thinking that is shown in the movie, and Dannys schizophrenic existence as a Jew and a Nazi. At the fascist
meetings that he attends, he reminds those present to focus on harassing Jews. As one might surmise, Danny definitely has conflicts with his heritage. The dogma of the Torah
fills him with rage as Danny interprets it as being irrelevant to God. He hates what he perceives as the weakness of the Jewish people, the way that they were
