each year has caused controversies. The ability to hold the Olympics in a city is perceived as an honor. One can imagine that the Olympics in Beijing is something that
perhaps was never imagined a couple dozen years ago. In an interview at around the time of the event, Taiwans President Ma Ying-jeou was asked what impact the Olympics would
have on China (Abdoolcarim and Schuman 26). He claimed it would elevate their status just as the 1964 Tokyo Olympics did for Japan (Abdoolcarim and Schuman 26). Indeed, the Olympics
are symbolic and the fact that China has held the Olympics already says something about its place in the world. Yet, it is important to explore the Olympics and exactly
what occurred there in order to understand why it is significant and what it says to the rest of the world. The Beijing Olympics have come and gone, but
like every Olympic games event, it was not without controversy. Some significant problems like drug use often crop up in the games, but in this particular Olympics, the Chinese did
very well. Obviously, it was their home turf and perhaps athletes were comfortable enough to take the lead in many events. However, there have been charges that for example, the
Chinese were using athletes too young to complete. It should be noted that in many instances the Chinese athletes would win, when many perceived a tie or another country in
the lead. However, in the end, the Chinese did not get the most medals. The United States was first in total medals (Gross). China did however have the most
