may strike many people as somewhat extreme, it is true that the music of the Beatles continues, after 40 years, to be extremely popular, influencing successive generations of young musicians,
as well as listeners. One of the early achievements of the band was the album entitled Revolver, which explored new musical territory, lyrical subjects and styles of composition
(Erlewine, 2004). One of the songs on this album, "For No One" (Lennon/McCartney), is a haunting elegy for a sadly ending romance -- "a love that should have lasted years"
(Stout, 2002). While the majority of the songs on Revolver can be construed as marking the beginnings of the Beatles journey toward increasing psychodelic music, "For No One" differs
from this assessment, as it is a sophisticated distillation of the music of an earlier era (Lockeretz, 2003). In this song, non-diatonic chords are placed precisely within a straightforward pop
progression, which marches in a stately fashion underneath an intimate melody (Lockeretz, 2003). As a general rule, Lennon and McCartney composed all of the Beatles music and they are listed
