primary focal point in the overall quest to facilitate environmental awareness. The green aspect of this particular partnership refers to a very specific understanding of and compliance with standards/regulations that
relate to resource conservation, pollution prevention and waste management; businesses that do not meet these stringent requirements are not accepted into or represented by the partnership. Motivation to comply,
however, is a significant component of the Bay Area Green Business Program, inasmuch as owners and managers who previously displayed little if any interest in becoming green often come to
realize the ease with which such accommodation can be made. Presently, the Bay Area Green Business Program represents more than five hundred public agencies and businesses as certified organizations
since its 1996 inception, not the least of which includes such notables as Lucas Films, Firemans Fund Insurance Company, Golds Gym, Embassy Suites, Marriott, YMCA, Birkenstock, Toyota, Honda, Starbucks and
myriad other local and regional organizations. "Until recently, most environmental initiatives targeted big businesses. The Bay Area Green Business Program chose to work with small and medium-sized businesses
- auto repair, printing/graphic arts, and wineries. Small operators do not have dedicated environmental specialists on staff and are often not in a position to hire consultants. They
tend to avoid seeking help from government and therefore miss opportunities to run environmentally-responsible operations. As the Program matures, many counties are offering certification to a wider variety of
