each component was created. Some of the more progressive artists, architects, and industrialists have for some time appreciated that beauty could be determined by industry. One movement which
incorporates this emphasis is the Bauhaus movement of the early half of the twentieth century, The Bauhaus movement revolved around an effort to
congeal all the arts (even arts as diverse as the visual arts, industrial art, and architecture) into one socially oriented program in which social responsibility of the artist served as
an emphasis (Huovio, 2002). The movement also emphasized a balance between aesthetics, technical merit, and practicality (Huovio, 2002). Based on the belief that the most discernible difference between
handicraft and industry could be explained by a subdivision in labor in industry contrasted with the totalitarian control wielded by a single craftsman in handicraft (Kraus, 2002), the movement would
seek to serve as a point of consolidation in the arts. Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius localized solution to the fragmentation he witnessed in the arts was the combination of
the Weimar Academy of Arts, the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts, and the newly affiliated department of architecture into the Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar (Brady, 2000). The movement would
reach much further than Weimar Germany, however. It would progress not only through Germany but across international borders (Glazova, 2002).
