The Battle of Paoli was one of the lowest points of our countrys history. The Revolutionary War as a whole had had many defeats and many times of
lowered troop morale but the Battle of Paoli, now remembered by many historians as the Paoli Massacre, had been a time of utter defeat. Our troops at Paoli were
simply not prepared to meet the polished and experienced forces of the British infantry. While British accounts of the battle boast of such particulars as the British "headgear of
bearskin caps, leather caps or tricorne hats depending on whether the troops were grenadiers, light infantry or battalion company men", American accounts tell of our troops dressed in whatever they
could fashion (BritishBattles.com, 2004). Some of our troops had blue military issue coats but most wore only the rough clothing that they had left at their disposal. No
only were our troops poorly equipped for the Battle of Paoli, they were poorly trained. The consequence was a massacre in which between 200 and 300 (dependent on the
source) American lives were lost. As a more positive note, however, the Battle of Paoli served as a wake up call. General Washington recognized the problems that were
at hand and initiated a strategy to correct them. That strategy involved the encampment at Valley Forge and an aggressive training program for American troops. The lessons learned
at Paoli are not restricted to applications in military strategy. Indeed, they are lessons that could find applicability in a number of situations, not the least of which is
