to secede from the Union, but historians know the war was fought over whether slavery should be prohibited or not. Despite falling behind in the war from 1861-62, there were some key battles that eventually helped the North win the war in 1865. Two of these key battles were the Battle of Antietam fought in 1862 in Maryland and the Battle of Gettysburg fought in July, 1863 in Pennsylvania. Both battles were absolute bloodbaths, and some argue that the Battle of Antietam was more important than Gettysburg because it was the first battle ever fought on Northern soil during the War. However, the Battle of Gettysburg, with its approximate 58,000 casualties, served as a turning point in the war as Union generals defeated attacks by General Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy and consequently stymieing any further advancement by the South into Northern territory. After Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln understood that the South was on its heels. It had depleted its resources, casualties were mounting and soldiers were stranded with no headquarters to call home. Lincoln knew it was time to put the nail in the coffin and put an end to this horrific war. But the one question that has harassed presidents, dictators, emperors and kings for ages is how does one win a war? In his book, Precis of the Art of War, French writer and historian Antoine-Henri de Jomini established three theories militaries typically follow. They are: grand strategy, operational strategy and tactical strategy. Grand strategy is basically the overall scheme and how a particular strategy will be executed.
